UR - The Theory (Retroactive Records)

Part of an ep that contained Underground Resistance The Theory, Urban Tribe Covert Action,
BFC Please Stand By, Carl Craig Wrap Me In Its Arms, Sarah Gregory As Time Goes By.

A quality UR moment and probably the best of example of all that's good about Detroit Techno. When I get a minute, I'll post up a couple of the other tracks that grace this rare ep.

The Black Cuban Opera - The Sound of Love (Black China Records)

For those of you lucky enough to be have been around The Steel City circa 1990 and the delights of Cuba and Jive Turkey where Winston Hazel and Parrot played some of the best music of the time; you might remember hearing this gem - or maybe not...

An underated piece of house music which had the right elements of a hard beat and bassline tinged with a subtle acid loop - quality.

7A3 Goes Like Dis (Geffen)

Coming straight out of Cali, 7A3 mustered one lng player before all but disappearing apart from DJ Mixmaster Muggs who started life as a mobile DJ in Southern California

Brett B and Sean B provide lyrics on this fine piece of party rap (and non too cheesy either) 7A3 crew. Released on rock label Geffen Records picked up the radio-friendly party rap style (that same year Geffen turned down N.W.A.).

After the group broke up Muggs gained wider recognition with Cypress Hill as then producer/DJ and for his work on House of Pain's "Jump Around".

English Muffin - The Blood Of An English Muffin EP (Industrial Strength)

Hardcore you know the Bobby Moore!
Fantasticly unrepentive ep from Leonardo Didesiderio and Ralph D'Agostino AKA Lenny D and Ralphie D.
First couple of hundred pieces originaly pressed in an pink Industrial Strength sleeve. The rest came in an standard grey Industrial Strength sleeve.
Grab the three tracks from below - but only for the headstrong.

INSIDEaMIND

Last night was a revolution at RebelBass HQ, Waxfactor brought round Prof. Fingers & Steptone from Toronto based InsideaMind. Armed with 2 MPC's,2 PC,s,Live Bass and Turntable we cooked up some of the most illbient postrock jazzhop, 5 tracks totally improvised racking in a total time of 70 minutes. Id never met Prof Fingers and Stepone in my life but within 10 minutes Wax was playing live drums from the MPC, i grabbed the bass, Prof Fingers pulled some vinyl onto the turntable and Stepone was adding mad scientific shit off his MPC. A bunch of very cool guys and i hope to stay in touch and keep jamming in the future (Respect to Waxfactor for international relations)

This jam session can now be heard !!!!!

Rhythm Formation - Serial Image (Acacia)

The second Rhythm Formation did exactly as the first, not just by having heavily constructed loops that built up ten years before Basic Channel added a few chords; but like the first 12 inch it played from the middle outwards - just a simple case of altering the mechanism of the pressing machine. Again Claude Young does the production alongside Keli Hand.

Rhythm Formation - Get Ready for the Darkness (Acacia)

A truly fantastic piece of dark trippy techno that was a million miles away from the rest of Detroit's Transmat, Metroplex, KMS fraternity. Over ten minutes long, and fitting in well with Lil Louis' Original Video Clash, this is a killer track - hear me now!

Rhythm Device - Acid Rock (USA)

Composed by the great Frank de Wulf who graced us with the glorious B-Sides eps in the early 90s. Acid Rock was a psych-out stone wash track of epic proportions. The main synth riff was sampled by Kickin Records artist "Messiah" on "There is no Law" as found on the compilation below pop pickers.

Champion Sound - Kickin Records (Various)

Seminal brit hardcore imprint Kickin records means a lot to Rebelbass HQ as we were signed to em :D but you'll have to find out who for yourselves . . . .This contains all the classics from its glory days, amazing really if you saw the eqipment that we had to work on, but all respect goes to German uberstar Ralph p Ruppert (Hey Rastas) the in house engineer and producer who taught me all about the studio the hard way ,editing tape with a razor etc... proper old school was Ralphy unsuprising really as he worked with Frank Florian and learnt his skills in Conny Planks studio :O Anyhow get the white gloves on and get on one matey !!

Tracklisting :

Big shout going out to Sheffield Bleep, Watch ya bassbins !

Fugi - Mary dont take me on no bad Trip (Chess)

Imagine Marvin Gaye fronting Parlifunkadelicment and you have the Fugi LP. This is some serious acid soaked soul for your head not much info online about this guy but Rebelbass are digging and we will get back to you as this is just the BOMB!! I wonder why he was blackballed as it says on the cover ?
Thanks to Lonely Soul for the up on this, he tha man.
9 solid slabs of funk to free your ass.

Techno Grooves - They Have Not Lived (R&S)

Again on R&S and Stealth, Techno Grooves Mach 1 ep (6 tracks) showed early promise. Other notable track 'Aboriginal' (I may pop that up sometime soon) utilises a digeridoo sample, but it was fellow R&S stablemate The Aphex Twin who took that plaudit for his own Digeridoo 12 inch.

LINKAGE

Techno Grooves - Hiawa (R&S)

Taken from Techno Grooves Mach 2 EP (on R&S) although the first four eps both came out on R&S and Stealth - later EPs just Stealth. Sounding closer to London and The Black Dog, it's subtle techno with a hint of Chicago House.

Techno Grooves - 100% Of DX-ing You (Stealth)

Not only Erik van Vliet and Rick van Breugel's 100% Of DX-ing You is a nod to Detroit but the very title seems to point directly to Derrick May and his fave keyboard the Yamaha DX-100, although would possibly now deny that in true hardcore style.

100% Of DX-ing You is a great example that Detroit Techno can be done well by white guys living in Europe.

Techno Grooves - Christ (Stealth)

Taken from the Mach 3 ep, they went from Mach 1 all the way up to 12 over period of seven years. Christ stands out as a fine example of the kind of stuff coming out of Belgium in 91.

Aptly church bells and monks are added with great effect to hard beat that on the right sound system could move mountains.

DHS - This is Acid (PIAS)

Acid! I'm gonna give you acid! And that's what they did. By Benjamin Stokes and arrangements on track B2 Jack Dangers for Meat Beat Manifesto Productions. Featured cut though is B1, pure trippy experience, make sure you don't turn the strobe on for this baby.

Armitage Shanks - LFO 1-2 (R&S)

Following half a dozen years' worth of Euro techno, hoover and hardcore; Belgium's R&S Records started not only to cast its geographical net further afield to Japan and England for stock but also its musical net.
B Side to the oddly named Stoke on Trent, lfo 1-2 (lowercase) is a fine example of drum n bass come rave come techno. And a decade on it's none too shabby either.

Dismasters - Black and Proud
(Urban Rock Records)

A fantasticly under-rated piece of hip hop history, most notably the stand out track from their And Then Some LP. The Dismasters, or Dis Masters as the sleeve points out appeared on the rap radio 1987-89, where did they go? Maybe someone upset them after asking them to put some clothes on. Wherever they went, they left us with a quality tune.

Wagon Christ - Phat Lab nightmare
(Rising High)

Luke Vibert's first dabblings with Samplers and Synths produced this LP for Rising High in 1994, rumour has it he got the contract signed and then rushed out borrowing kit and buying up cheap stuff from Loot as he owned fuck all to make his Debut ;). At Rebel Bass we think this was the best thing he did before floating off to make bonkers drum n bass for papa as Plug.
Dark unsettling ambience and fractured beats are on the menu, order up a large portion.

Tiefschwarz - You (Promo)

Tiefschwarz (German for Deep Black) up to this point had made very uplifting vocal house as evidenced on th A side of this but things were afoot in the Tiefschwarz camp and the Dub on the flipside was showing the darker path they were taking .A serious slab of Housemusic for ya momma to move her waistline to the bassline.

Pumpkin and the Profile Allstars - Here Comes That Beat (Profile)

The scratch, the bass....

Featuring more rappers than you care to shake a stick at, DJ Pumpkin gathered together some of the cream of the crop including...wait for it.. Dr. Jeckyll and Mr Hyde, Fresh 3 M.C.'s, Greg G and Mr. Troy (of Disco Four), plus a couple of other lesser know acts.

The track is an audio fusion of 808s, reverberated scratches and rolling double act raps. Back in 1984 it was the breaker's choice and still holds a place in the hearts of many a geriatric B Boy.

N-Joi - Live in Manchester (12")

Sounds of the foghorn,Multicoloured lasers, flavoured smoke, Whistle posse in the place, Hold it down,How many you had ?,Where you from ?What you on ? Lovin it proper,Rewind come again selector, big fish little fish cardboardbox!!!!

Major Problems - Murder - 25 to Life
(Nu Groove)

Perhaps giving more of a nod to Detroit and what Jeff Mills and Mad Mike Banks were up to. "Murder 25 to Life" from the "City Under Siege" EP was a serious piece of ass shaking music.

Relentless bass and atmpospheric build up made this select track the choice of the three, happily titled Arson and Manslaughter - again fitting in with Detroit's darker elements.

Major Problems - Overdose (The Final Trip)
(Nu Groove)

One of three eps released by Major Problems on the seminal Nu Groove label out of New York. Made up of Leonardo Didesiderio aka Lenny D and Ralphie Dee, their three eps crossed over from the basic elements of house music into the early rave scene that was developing in New York's warehouses. Notably the ep was produced by non other than Joey Beltram.

The two also went on to record under the guise of English Muffin and dropped the classic hardcore Ride. Sadly Nu Groove struggled to maintain such a high quality of product and faded away a few years after this. The selected cut Overdose it taken from; The Effects can Last Forever ep - how true!

The Break Boys - And The Break Goes On
(Fourth Floor Records)

While Chicago was rockin with Trax, Underground, and DJ International, New York was bringing it's innovative sound to the party.

Frankie Mitchell aka Frankie Bones and Tommy Musto combined Latino attitude, horn stabs, Apache breaks and shouts to make a serious rocking tune. And it still stands up almost 20 years later, you don't believe me?

Motorbass - Motorbass EP (Motorbass)

When i first was sent the first Motorbass stuff i knew it was all change. Transported to Paris were the sounds of strobe laden northern Warehouse parties circa 90/91 as soundtracked by Network and Warp records. This was music that sounded empty like early bleep mutated with a broken sampler and a drunken Giorgio Moroder at the helm. "Pansoul" their debut LP was on the horizon and this showed where we were heading. La Funk Mob,Le Chatte Rouge,Maffia Bass,Cassius and Superdiscount we thank you all :D

Meat Beat Manifesto - 99% LP

For me this is where electronic music finally wrenched my guitar from my greasy hand for a few years. I never realised electronics could be this hard and fierce and it opened a whole other world of likeminded bands. The fusion of beats ,synths and guitars was unlike anything that had come before bar PWEI but this was on a totally different level. Jack Dangers taught me the "studio is an instrument". If you have never heard em before expect distorted breaks, synths at breaking point, bad bass, vocals and the madest sax cuts. This is their defining moment.
