Dark - Round the Edges (1971 Private Press)

One of the most expensive and rarest records ever produced,in the 70's you could press up to 99 copies of a record and not have to pay tax on them :) so loads of small bands expoited this fact like the Itacha,Agincourt,etc... Lps but in the process they have become the most sought after of all the proggy heavy fuzz psyche albums. This Lp is incredible the guitar playing is some of the best ive heard, great vocals, long tracks, great bass and drumming and its HEAVY and FUZZY as well as having some chilled folky passages. This and the Lps below have made this year a fantastic summer for music for me and id like you to hear this lost classic :)

Tracklisting :

1.Darkside
2.Maypole
3.Live for Today
4.R.C.8
5.The Cat
6.Zerotime
7.In the Sky
8.Wasting your Time
9.Could have Sworn
10.Maypole (Live)

Samuel Prody (1970)

More brainstorming heavy psyche from my favorite period of British music. This is a guitar burnout of epic proportions in the same acid fried greasy style as the Pink Faries and May Blitz. This is their only record that they produced which is one hell of a shame as they really are a great unit and the playing is fantastic including some proper phased out jams.Heavy and freaky, indeed , i cant get enough of it :) This and May Blitz are soundtracking my summer and its a big ole fat greasy sun !
Tracklist:

1. Who Will Buy
2. Woman
3. Time Is All Mine
4. Scat Shuffle
5. She's Mine
6. Mr. Make Believe It
7. Hallucination

The Spiritual Highjackers - Alzir (MTB)

At the same time as we made The Barretts recordings for MTB records we came into contact with The Spiritual Highjackers and Tonal signed them up straight away no messing. I only saw them live twice and it was a experience ill never forget, playing forgotten 60's psych classics from the UK and US the band were a shadowy bunch much like the Residents playing behind a liquid disc projected white screen the only visible sign of the band their elongated, distorted figures in silhouette lit from behind but oozing lysergic madness from their delay and phaser units. This is also the 1st time this has been made available since the ultra rare recordings on MTB are now deleted and the band sunk back into obscurity never to be heard of again . . . .

Personell :
Lee Harvey Kennedy - Guitar/Vocals
Owsley Mc Lennon - Bass/Vocals
Dickie Byrd - Brass/Organ
Jack Aroma - Drums

The Barretts - Flapdoodle Dealings (MTB)

In 1993 when i was in London i was friends with a bunch of guys all of us in bands/running labels etc. and we ended up jamming together all the time as we all shared the same studio. We were all massive psychadelic music freeks and discovered a love of all things Syd. We decided to get some stuff on tape, and soon other friends were asking us to play gigs so we thought "What the hell " and did 5 gigs around Londontown. We played Oval,Kilburn. The Monarch in Camden and 2 gigs at Fungus Mungus veggie restaurant in Battersea in the winter of 1993/94 all gigs were rammed to the point of us having to play in the shop window at Fungus to bemused looks from the general public :) the gigs were a riot of period clothing, liquid disc projections, psychadelics and much grooving to the sounds of early Pink Floyd and Syds solo stuff. Anyhow for the first time ever im making the few recordings i have from this period available as Syd has sadly passed on and now more than ever it feels right to get his music heard so enjoy

Personell :

May Blitz (Vertigo)

May Blitz along with the Groundhogs and The Pink Faries define a time in British music when times where changing.Gone were all the faux psychadelic tracks and everyone was turning prog so some British bands decided to get their heads down and just rock out, May Blitz being one of the best, featuring ex-Jeff Beck Group member Tony Newman (drums), who recruited Canadians James Black (lead guitar, vocals) and Reid Hudson (bass and vocals) in 1969 to form one of the best of the UK power trios. Their debut album "May Blitz" was released on Vertigo (6360 007) in 1970 but despite containing some excellent original heavy music sold moderately and was followed in 1971 in much the same direction by "The 2nd of May" pure doped up,psychadelic boogie merchants of the highest order :D

Tanzmuzik - Sinseikai (Rising High)

More Rising High oddities for your ears. Tanzmuzik hailed from Japan comprising of Akio Yamamoto and Okihide Sawaki. They released this Lp on Rising High in 1994 and set out a new agenda to western electronic music producers as this sounds like they were taking no notice of anything classed as "Dance Music". Freed from rigid western music scales and thinking Tanzmuzik created vast epic techno flavoured soundscapes unlike anything there contemporaries were making. Dark and unsettling but fragile and beautiful at the same time this is a great unsung Lp of electronica.

The Kooky Scientist - Old vs Neau

Some minimal ass wiggling techno from ex Psychic Tv man Fred Giannelli. I came across this track via its video many years ago and its a scream fest as the track is cut over the top of some Ready steady go style footage of young hipsters grooving away in black and white, the track is cut to there dancing perfectly but sadly i cant find it anywhere online so if anyone has a digi version please get in touch as id love to see it again. Kick up your heels and get dancing . .

Bedouin Ascent - Treading the Earth

Bedouin Ascent were even a bit of an oddity on Rising High records and thats saying something,His 1st EP for them was an ethnic fuelled journey through beats and textures and the second a beautiful 6 tracker of damaged tonal bleepouts. This track "Treading the Earth" comes from the 1st EP and is a deep pulsing lo tech phaseout. As his career progressed Kingsuk Biswas's music just got more and more far out and became more aquired in sound

Sextant - Live at XS (Brute)

This smashing piece of Pete Namlook (Peter Kuhlmann ) and Hubertus Held was licensed oddly the Brute label which was home for many a trancelike release, including the quality recordings of Van Basten. The link is for the b-side Live at XS - 15 1/2 minutes of the best ambience you'll ever hear (excuse the crackly vinyl).

Underground Resistance - Interstellar Fugitives 2

We love Underground Resistance at Rebelbass HQ one reason i wanted to buy black boxes covered in dials to abuse way back in 1989 and one thing that me and Tat found we both loved and there wasnt many of us at first :) From their early hardcoreacidhouse beginnings to pureacid workouts and their tough electro battleships they have consistantly made some of the best techno of all time. If your new to em check out Interstellar Fugitives 1 a quad pack of the wobbliest, funkiest, hardest motor city grooves that had been around for years and they came back last year with this LP that hasnt been picked up on as much as the first one did and i think its just as fierce and keeping to the UR feel goes against the current trends in electronics that the masses fall into . . . Here's 2 tracks from it to worm into your ears and get it from here UR and fund the resistance !

Dismasters - And Then Some (Sure Delight)

Certainly proud of their African Roots, The Dismasters were possibly one of the first rap groups, along with Stetsasonic to touch onto Africanism.

The album had a few stand out moments, namely the singles Small Time Hustler, Black and Proud and You must be Crazy - as featured below.

4 Hero - In Rough Territory (Reinforced Records)

The first full length LP to be released on the Reinforced label, which for much of the early nineties defined the devloping rave and jungle scenes before devloping into darker and more techy areas. Even so, this LP gave much of a nod to the sounds coming out of Detroit as much as it did London. The limited edition copy came with original 12" called Combat Dancing featuring Mr Kirk's Nightmare / Move Wid The House Groove / Combat Dance. Below are two tracks from the LP that take a leaf or two from Detroit and Chicago - enjoy.

Can't Strain my Brain

An absolute classic and breakers' choice from back in the day - featuring the cuts of DJ Cheese who was the second ever DMC World Champion - starter for ten - who was the first?
More powerful than Coast to Coast and just as tough as Z3 MCs Triple Threat which appeared on this Duke Bootee imprint.
